  124. I use The Message Manager to read/reply to all my messages.  TMM is
  125. answering mail the Mac way.  I can cut/copy/paste, easily quote and click
  126. on icons (even color ones!).  After all, what would life be without color
  127. icons.

  344. Apparently that is not the case.  FlashBox come with an init and a software
  345. drive (or network, similar to Apple talk, I think is called softalk).  So it
  346. is a hardware/software combination.  It will work only when Tops is used, at
  347. least that was true untill Tops 3.0 (do not know about new version).

  352. As I explained above apparently it needs some software in conjunction with
  353. Taps for Macintosh to use the FlashBox.  When this combination is not present
  354. the built in hardware net work drive (I suppose) in Macintosh is used.  There
  355. is a warning comes up before the Mac is booted and infor you that is what Mac
  356. is going to use instead of FlashBox.  I hope this helped.

  495. Modem scripts. This writes the current settings to the modem's NVRAM, but:

  500. 2> The last I heard, NVRAM has a limited number of write commands it can accept
  501. during its lifetime -- it's not like normal RAM which can be rewritten an

  645.  I believe that you and I exchanged messages on GEnie concerning tidE and I
  646. for one am extremely pleased with its overall performance. I just upgraded
  647. the BBS Mac and have it networked to my "work" Mac both on system 7.0 with
  648. the bbs volume mounted on the work Mac via filesharing and a tidE alias in
  649. the apple menu. So far, so good! Even though there are little "quirks" I
  650. have not had a corrupted file section due to tidE and that's after about a
  651. couple of years of use on about 13 files sections. Thanks for helping to
  652. provide a very good SS utility!

  669. I think it's great *provided* you have enough memory to run it. Even a
  670. relatively modest message base like mine needs to be run on a 4 meg
  671. configuration. Not that you will use all 4 megs, but 2.5 megs as I had
  672. before didn't seem to be enough. I kept getting out of memory errors even
  673. after disabling practically all inits and cdevs and using heapfixer.
  674.   
  675. I have no problems running my copy with my echomail - it could be the demo
  676. is limited in that regard. The interface, search, cut and paste, scrolling,
  677. quoting, etc. is very good. You can also send cc's ("carbon copies") of
  678. messages to groups of individuals -these groups can be configured and filed
  679. away in the "address book." I now am running system 7.0 on the BBS mac and
  680. the dynamic heap adjustment in 7.0 probably helps alot as well. TMM works
  681. fine *if* you don't try to use filesharing, though. When trying to use TMM
  682. on my other Mac, replying to a message via the network froze it up. I will
  683. be sending a message to the Tuttles concerning this.  Other than that, I
  684. can recommend it as a great message editor for Second Sight.

  847. Russ, Erik Selberg has a new version of Dungeons (2.74) that he hopes will
  848. work with System 7. The only hitch is that it needs to work with its old
  849. setup (i.e. an existing entry in the System file). I had trashed all
  850. Dungeon programs from my BBS hard disk after converting to System 7, so I
  851. can't get it to configure. If you still have your older resources
  852. installed, you might want to give it a try.
  853.   He indicated that Wrestling is next followed by Empire but it could take
  854. a while as he has limited hardware resources.

  1294. 2.74 blew up on me when I tried to do setup. Erik seemed to think that if
  1295. someone had a preexisting options file that it would not crash. If you
  1296. still have that file present, you might consider giving 2.74 a try, if not,
  1297. then you are stuck waiting for 2.75 with me.

  1469. in Australian by me and now thhere feed to all the Mac BBS's in Australia
  1470. which theres only a few. There are no Mac echos started in Australia which 
  1471. goes out of the country so i throught I would send a few of mine, and I
  1472. did contact MacUser to comfirm it was ok so i'm starting typing it up.
  1473. Echomac is to large so most of us cant get through all the messages and by 
  1474. cutting it in half by having my areas should improve it.
  1475.

  1529. DD has two different versions of FREE expand only utilities (one is automatic
  1530. [double click one item] & one is for multiple unfolding [open the appl & then
  1531. select your items to unfold]).

  1533. DD generally does save more space than SI or CP, so I can see why Michael has
  1534. chosen DD format. Not only that, but DD will also expand .pit & .sit files,
  1535. so this way a user can use DDExpand to unfold everything except CP files.
  1536.

  1659. That completely ignores the educational issue. Now I have to explain to my 
  1660. less experienced users that they have to download still another utility to 
  1661. be able to use the files. Despite the fact that I leave help files all
  1662. over the place (every menu has context sensitive help) I still get dozens
  1663. of questions as to "what do I have to do to get this file that I
  1664. downloaded to launch--it tells me 'application is busy or is missing'". I
  1665. don't use the free versions of anything that is commercial or shareware
  1666. since I insist on owning my software. The selection of DD will likely
  1667. prevent me from purchasing the BBS in a Box CD as a result since I just
  1668. don't need the headaches though I want the files.

  1670. For me disk space is not an issue. I've got all the disk space I could
  1671. ever need and I suspect that there wasn't any need to compress files still 
  1672. further to get them onto the Cd (though of course this is speculation),

  1697. Both Compactor and DD will be supported. The use of DD is 20 times faster
  1698. for me than Compactor with the Doubleup board so you know where I will be
  1699. heading.
  1700. Further the expand init and application will be on the CD so you really need
  1701. not buy it unless you like it too.

  1758. The next issue of (Volume II) BBS in a BOX is 640 megs. This issue 
  1759. will support a new section as well. We have just signed a license 
  1760. agreement with Adobe to redistribute all 230 of their screen fonts 
  1761. on the CD.

  1763. This will be the only CD out there with the entire collection at press time.
  1764. Adobe has agreed to maintain us with all the current updates as well.
  1765. In fact the set we are currently mounting will not be released by Adobe 
  1766. for a few months... cool hey!

  1816. up message base searches.  If you have four megs. of RAM in the SE,
  1817. initially try giving yourself a one meg. RAM cache and see if it helps.

  1942. work fine now with Battlefield 3.51 dated July of this year. Dungeons 2.74
  1943. is Erik's first attempt at System 7 compatibility and I think it falls
  1944. short.

  2057. I've got two scheduled events: one at 11:50pm and one at 5:00am (ZMH).  If my
  2058. BBS gets crashmailed shortly before one of these schedules is scheduled to start
  2059. and processing isn't completed until after the scheduled start time, Second
  2060. Sight/Tabby doens't start the event.
  2061.   
  2062. Example.  I get a crashmail call at 11:45pm.  It finishes at midnight.  The
  2063. 11:50pm event doesn't start.  In fact, the BBS continues to wait until 11:50pm
  2064. -- THE NEXT DAY.  In that case, it also misses ZMH.
  2065.   
  2066. This is becoming a nuisance.  Since I participate in MACFILES and have two mail
  2067. feeds, crashmail calls come in at all times of the day and night.  I FREQUENTLY
  2068. miss events that I have to make up during prime time.  In addition, if the ZMH
  2069. schedule is missed, I've got to change SS's Config file to adjust the starting
  2070. time -- so it processes the 11:50 event rather than waiting until 5:00am.
  2071.   
  2072. I use Pete's TSet and believe I have it installed correctly.  What can I do
  2073. about this problem?

  2224. your crashmail stings (don't EVER put it there), then the crashmail would
  2225. have to be overrunning the END of the scheduled event to cause that
  2226. problem.  Check the times and see if that's the case.

  2264. Have the time of your event longer, foe example 30 minutes.  Then set your event
  2265. as special.  
  2266.   
  2267. First if you got a crash mail and it took fifteen or twenty minutes for the
  2268. mail to process your event time is not expired and so Tabby event will be
  2269. launched.
  2270.  If 30 minute was not enough increase it until it is.
  2271.   
  2272. Second since you have your event as special, Tabby will quit as soon as it
  2273. finished
  2274. it's calls (if there is any), or after it no longer has any other activities
  2275. to perform.  This allows Tabby to quit and give the computer back to your BBS
  2276. program as soon as the event is done.

  2407. The problem happens only when the process crosses midnight.  If launchnext would
  2408. contain the date as well as the time, the problem would not happen, but since
  2409. we can't fix that, the only way that I know of to fix it is to change the 2350
  2410. event to start 11 minutes later at one minute after midnight (actually, any
  2411. time after midnight would do).

  2426. magnetic at the moment about 3/5 full. Since I've changed to mostly
  2427. optical for the BBS I have little need of the magnetic that remains free.

  2537. 4.0 and System 7?  Ever since I went to System 7 I've been unable to quote
  2538. messages (Cmd-') using TMM.  As soon as I enter Cmd-', the Mac hangs...

  2563. must fall, or it will not run. I would rather see something that lets her run
  2564. any missed event, regardless of how late it might be.

  2650. Turns out, I DID have TSet in a wrong place -- in the TabbyNet STR.  I'm hoping
  2651. that removing it solves the problem.

  2654. utilities
  2655. just before midnight: Log-O-Matic, for one.  If I don't keep at least one full
  2656. day's worth of CallerLog in unarchived format, Peephole won't report accurately.

  2804. event and continues until past midnight.  Therefore, the time in the SS config

  2828. hangs or problems. It's either init conflicts or perhaps you may be running
  2829. low on mem? I was having trouble with TMM with address errors before
  2830. upgrading the RAM to 4 megs on the Mac Plus, but the address errors also
  2831. happened with System 6.0.7.

  2844. The scrolling of messages and screen redraws in Second Sight 2.1 running
  2845. System 7.0 on a Mac Plus seems to be jerky and a tad slower than when
  2846. running under 6.x. My question <directed to Norm Goodger, really> is will
  2847. this be "corrected/fixed/worked-around" in 2.2 or is this a reality with
  2848. Second Sight and how it works with multitasking on a 68000 Mac...i.e. can
  2849. we expect no better? This "halting" in the scrolling happens even when
  2850. nothing else is going on in the background (i.e. network hard disk
  2851. accesses, screen savers, etc.)

  2870. Actually neither--it's just the way life is.  (Although the thread
  2871. probably belongs in the Tabby echo.)  If you have an event from 4-5 and
  2872. someone crashmails your system before 4 and it doesn't finish processing
  2873. until after 5, Tabby, when launched after the crashmail event, will
  2874. "think" the next event is at 4 the NEXT day.  As a result, all events are
  2875. lost for 24 hours.  There's no real fix unless Tabby could remember date
  2876. AND time so you'd just miss the one event.

  2894. better at the beginning.  If you put it at the beginning of an event then
  2895. the next event will be set no matter what happens in the current event. 
  2896. If you put it at the end, you run the risk of a long transfer carrying the 
  2897. current event past the it's scheduled end time and, if that happens, when
  2898. TSet runs it will think the next event must be 24 hours from now.

  2929. processing...Also, do you process outgoing mail after recieving and
  2930. processing ingoing mail after crashmail sessions? I do that, and it means
  2931. I only have to run a ZMH event...I'm not sure of your situation, but since 
  2932. I get crashmailed by my NEC about 8 times a day, mail is only a little
  2933. late...plus I process my own whenever I log off, so it isn't late... :)

  3028. has finished Dungeons v2.75 (compatible with Host and Sys 7). His next
  3029. project will be Wrestling (should be about two to three weeks, then

  3134. Yes, I do, but the 11:50 event runs a bunch of utilities and handles all my
  3135. FREQs (if any are sitting around).  It also sends mail OUT so that my feeds
  3136. can exchange it with their feeds when they poll later in the night.

  3209. I see your point (no pun intended).  Second Sight will see that it needs
  3210. to launch the next event at 2350 (or later), but since it's now earlier
  3211. (0500) it doesn't do it.  Okay, so I don't know the answer to this one
  3212. other than you're original suggestion to move the 2350 event.  Since Maria 
  3213. says the event HAS to occur at that time (to do end-of-day processing), I
  3214. suppose she could set her crashmail event to run 0001-2300 and just not
  3215. accept crashmail the last hour of the day.  That would keep it from
  3216. interferring.

  3230. I have just installed System 7 on myy Macplus and MacPortable, by the way
  3231. the + has 4mb of RAM and the Portable has 2.5mb and they are File Sharing
  3232. the + which is running the BBS is the Server, I have noticed that the
  3233. message searching is slower I have about 6000 messages on my system and it 
  3234. takes about 2 and a half minutes to search for messages?

  3253. I don't really think that's a System 7 problem.  The current versions of
  3254. SS just aren't designed to work with that large of a message base.  You'll 
  3255. need to use something like Mantissa or Mehitabel to keep your message base 
  3256. trimmed down to a "reasonable" size.  For SS, "reasonable" is somewhere
  3257. around 2000-2500 max.  I'
  3258. l'll assume you have a RAM cache on--that helps SS once the message base
  3259. is loaded.

  3350. You need to have at least two lines in your init modem and hang up modem
  3351. strings. The first is sent at the speed of the last connection, and the
  3352. second at the init baud rate. If you only use one line, the next caller
  3353. may have difficulties connecting if they call at a speed different than
  3354. the last caller BEFORE the first refresh is sent by Second Sight.

  3475. Yes, turning on File Sharing does slow down the computer.  I think that 6000
  3476. messages is too much under those circumstances; I keep my system trimmed to
  3477. between 2000 and 2500 messages, and that sometimes seems too many.

  3520. line.  Look them up individually in your modem manual and you'll probably find

  3550. I run about 2,500 messages on my system (Accelerated Plus (020/16) w/4MB RAM,
  3551. Finder w/768K RAM cache. I also have a very fast Quantum 105MB HD. My initial
  3552. newscan (from a reboot condition) takes about six seconds. Immediate follow
  3553. on scans/retrievals are almost instanteous. I have found that if you keep the
  3554. message base under 2,500 and or set your RAM cache to be larger than the MSGHDR
  3555. file, you can get pretty quick initial newscans and if the caller goes directly
  3556. to message reading while the MSGHDR is still in cache, things are very speedy.
  3557. The break even point on my system is 2,500 messages. Things slow down after
  3558. that and I can't imagine what would happen if I tried 6,000 messages!
